Tips on how to travel cheaply in Sri Lanka

During our trip around the world, we set aside a few days to get to know Sri Lanka. We arrived through the city of Colombo, where we stayed for 2 days. The first impressions and sensations are of a very poor country, with poor public transport and confusing traffic, with people driving in all directions and many horns.

Walking around the city of Colombo, we caught everyone's attention. Some women and children looked at us with admiration or curiosity, even pointed and asked us to take a selfie (for us to take with our cell phone..lol, see photo above..). Already a good part of the men, looked at me with malice, stared at me and kept measuring all the parts of my body. An unpleasant feeling. We went through situations where they even went to the middle of the passage to force me to bump into them.

It was not a country that pleased me very much for these reasons. Even with beautiful landscapes, the initial feeling was of impotence, degradation and constant discomfort. Of course, not all men are like that, we met very interesting people there, who were interested in knowing a little about our lives and telling us about theirs.

One young man, when walking with us through the streets to show us the region and tell us a little about the local culture, said that he liked to treat people from abroad well, because they went there to learn about his country. And he also said that this is how he would like to be treated when he goes to other countries. And, of course, part of this discomfort I felt was due to our economical way of traveling, in which we shared space on public transport and street food stalls.

Southern Beaches:

The beaches in the south of Sri Lanka are very beautiful and cater for all tastes: surfing, diving, enjoying the beach, restaurants, tourist facilities. It is up to each one to choose the beach that best fits their interests. I'll talk about the beaches. To know about Visa Click here

Unawatuna:

It has a great tourist structure and is very beautiful. On the beach there are several restaurants that offer beach umbrellas and chairs during the day and dinner at a table set on the sand at night. The beach has a tumble, so it is not the best option to enjoy a swim in the sea.

Galley:

Where is Gale Fort, very interesting structure. It was built by the Portuguese and rebuilt by the Dutch when they colonized the country. Inside the Fort is a charming little town, literally separated from the rest of Sri Lanka. Walking through the region, a Malaysian told us that when the tsunami happened, many foreigners bought the region and built a city in the European model, surrounded by the Fort and very different from the rest of the country.

There are two ways to get to know Sri Lanka: tourist or economic model. Each of them will show you a different part of the country. It is up to you to decide how and what you want to experience in Sri Lanka.
