 LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN IN CANBERRA

Lake Burley Griffin: the story:

During a stay in Canberra, Australia's capital, nature lovers can enjoy carefree hours of relaxation at Lake Burley Griffin. This artificial basin was created during the 1960s, right in the city center, by the American architect of the same name Walter Burley Griffin. It is 4 meters deep (calculated on average in the deepest area) and is about 11 kilometers long for a total area of 6.64 square kilometers. The peculiarity of this lake lies precisely in the structure, studied according to particular geometric shapes, strategically positioned to indicate some very specific geographical points. The initial project was drawn up a few years before 1950 but, given the severe global crisis, it was decided to delay the start of the excavations when the Great Depression (period following the Second World War) was over. In fact, the real construction works only started in 1960, ten years later. To begin, the architect arranged for the construction of some dams that would allow the waters of the Molongo River, which crossed Canberra to be conveyed, to convey them precisely inside what would later become the artificial lake. The most important dam built to contain the water inside the lake is called Dam.

The road that surmounts the building was called Lady Denman Drive and is currently equipped with a long cycle path from which it is possible to admire a suggestive glimpse of Lake Burley Griffin. In 1963, when these preliminary works were completed, it was necessary to interrupt the excavations again due to a severe drought that dried the river preventing the builders from using the necessary volume of water. It was then on October 17, 1964 that Lake Burley Griffin was officially inaugurated.

The islands:

Given its size, Lake Canberra is home to six islands on its surface, also artificial. The three smallest in size have not been given any names while the three largest are called Spinnaker and Spring bank (both located in the west of the basin) and Aspen (located in the most central area). The latter, given its proximity to the shore, is connected to the city by a pedestrian bridge. Visiting this island it will be possible to admire the famous Australian National Carillon donated by the British state as a tribute to the Australian people in honor of the 50th anniversary of the city. Equipped with 55 bells, it is fully managed and guarded by national authorities under a mandate from the Commonwealth of Australia. The sound produced by this enchanting and imposing music box can be heard perfectly from a hundred meters away, but its melody also reaches much further. In the immediate vicinity of the Australian National Carillon stands the Worker National Memorial, in honor of those killed at work. Facing difficulty in getting the visa

The bridges:

The shores of Lake Burley Griffin are connected by the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge and the Kings Avenue Bridge. Both connections were made previously with respect to the insertion of water inside the artificial basin. The purpose with which these two bridges were built does not only include the connection between one area and another of the city. In fact, multiple fluorescent flexible tubes were installed throughout the entire structure of the Kings Avenue Bridge, capable of providing complete lighting not only to the bridge but also to the waters below and the surrounding areas. Thanks to the success of the project, the second bridge was subsequently designed and built: the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge.
